Transcribed from HMRC's software finder on 6 July 2026. All 106handle quarterly updates; “Tax return” means HMRC also lists the year-end return. “Free version” is HMRC's flag — it doesn't always mean free MTD filing, and some free versions require a particular bank account. HMRC recognition is a technical check, not a recommendation.

How this list relates to our reviews

Everything above is recognised, but not everything above is something a typical sole trader or landlord would (or could) buy: the full list includes accountant-practice suites, farm-management systems, trade-job apps and features inside bank accounts. Our reviewed catalogue covers the 34tools we've been able to verify properly — true VAT-inclusive annual cost from the vendor's own pricing page, what each plan actually includes, and who it suits — per our methodology. We keep adding to it as we verify more of the list above.

Tools people look for that aren't on the list

These three were in our own catalogue until we checked every product against HMRC's finder in June 2026. None of them appeared, so we stopped listing them — if you came here looking for one, that's why.

FreshBooks
Not on HMRC's list. Its own documentation described record-keeping and exporting your figures to file elsewhere, rather than submitting MTD for Income Tax updates itself (checked June 2026).
GoSimpleTax
Not on HMRC's list under its own name. Its MTD for Income Tax route is Coconut, which is on the list. See our Coconut review.
AffordableMTD
Not on HMRC's finder in any of our checks — neither the June 2026 runs nor the snapshot above.

Recognition status changes and vendors do get added — check the live list on GOV.UK before ruling anything out.

Frequently asked questions

How many HMRC-recognised MTD for Income Tax software products are there?
106, as of HMRC's software finder on 6 July 2026. The list grows as more vendors pass HMRC's recognition process, so the count changes over time.
Are all of these free?
No — 26 of the 106 offer a free version according to HMRC; the rest are paid. "Free version" also doesn't always mean free MTD filing (some free tiers cover bookkeeping only, or are free only with a particular bank account), so check before relying on it.
Can all of them file my year-end tax return?
Not yet. All 106 handle the quarterly updates, but HMRC lists only 60 as also covering the year-end tax return. If a tool is quarterly-only today, you'll need another route for the final step — this is common across the market while vendors finish building it.
Why do you review only 34 of them in depth?
Our reviews carry verified, VAT-inclusive prices checked against each vendor's own pricing page — that's only honest for tools we can actually verify, that an individual sole trader or landlord can buy directly. Many of the 106 are accountant-practice suites, industry-specific systems (farming, trades), or bank-app features. We add more as we verify them.
Is this the official HMRC list?
It's a faithful copy of it. HMRC's own finder is an interactive tool rather than a page you can read or link to, so we transcribe the full results and republish them here as a table, with the capture date shown. For the live version, use HMRC's finder on GOV.UK.
