MTD Software Finder exists to answer one question honestly: which Making Tax Digital for Income Tax tool actually costs you the least?Vendors advertise a tempting “from £X/month” — usually ex-VAT, often on a plan that doesn't cover everything you do. We cut through that to the real, VAT-inclusive annual cost of the cheapest plan that genuinely fits your income.
Who builds this
MTD Software Finder is built and maintained by Dominic Roe, a Data Engineer & Business Intelligence Developer based in Sheffield with over seven years' experience building data pipelines and reporting platforms for public-sector and commercial organisations. His profession is, quite literally, making data trustworthy: designing single-source-of-truth data warehouses, ETL/ELT pipelines, and the validation that stops numbers being quietly wrong or quietly gamed.
That is the same discipline this site applies to MTD software pricing — an area where the headline figure is routinely misleading. Dominic holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of Salford, where his final-year project modelled financial time series using Monte Carlo simulation and regression, and he builds personal-finance software in his spare time. He is not an accountant or a tax adviser, and nothing on this site is tax advice — but turning messy, inconsistent vendor pricing into one honest, comparable annual number is precisely the kind of problem he works on every day.

How we stay independent
This is an independent comparison tool, not a vendor and not affiliated with HMRC. We earn affiliate commission when you sign up through some of our links — but that never changes your price and never changes the ranking. Results are sorted purely on true annual cost and fit, decided before any commercial consideration. When a cheaper plan exists but doesn't cover your income types, we say so rather than burying it.
How we keep the data honest
Prices, tiers and HMRC recognition change constantly — that's the failure mode of every static “best MTD software” blog post. Our catalogue of 15 products is reconciled against vendor pricing pages and HMRC's software finder on a schedule.
