MTD Software Finder

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 25 June 2026

MTD Software Finder is built to need as little of your data as possible. There are no accounts, no sign-up forms, and no advertising trackers. The finder runs entirely in your browser, so the answers you give it never reach us. This page explains the small amount of data that is involved when you use the site, and your rights over it.

Who is responsible for your data

MTD Software Finder is operated by Dominic Roe, based in Sheffield, United Kingdom, who is the data controller for the purposes of UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). For any privacy question or request, email dom@whichmtdsoftware.co.uk.

What we collect — and what we don't

We deliberately keep this short, because the list is short:

  • Your finder answers — not collected. The questions you answer to get a recommendation are processed on your device, in your browser, to rank the software. They are not transmitted to us, not logged, and not stored anywhere.
  • Anonymous, aggregated usage analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to see roughly how many people visit which pages. It is privacy-first and does not use cookies or store any information that identifies you — see the Cookie Policy.
  • Standard server logs. Like any website, our host (Vercel) automatically processes basic technical request data — including IP address, browser type and the page requested — to deliver pages, keep the site secure and diagnose faults.
  • Affiliate click events. When you click a partner link, we record that a click happened on a given product (and when), so we can measure which comparisons are useful. This is not linked to your identity. You are then taken to the partner's own site — see Affiliate Disclosure.
  • Emails you send us. If you email us a correction or question, we hold that message and your email address for as long as needed to deal with it.

We do not collect special category data, we do not build advertising profiles, and we never sell your data.

Why we're allowed to use it (legal bases)

Under UK GDPR our lawful basis is legitimate interests for running and securing the site, understanding aggregate usage, and measuring affiliate clicks — none of which is intrusive and all of which is necessary to operate an independent comparison tool. Where you choose to email us, we rely on your consent and our legitimate interest in responding.

Who else is involved

We keep third parties to a minimum and only use established providers:

  • Vercel — hosts the site and provides the cookieless analytics described above, acting as our processor.
  • Affiliate networks and software vendors(for example Impact.com and direct vendor programmes) — only once you click through to them. From that point you are on their website and their own privacy and cookie policies apply; we don't control what they collect.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, that transfer is covered by appropriate safeguards such as the UK's International Data Transfer Agreement or adequacy regulations.

How long we keep it

Aggregated analytics are retained only in summary form and contain nothing that identifies you. Server logs are kept by our host for a short period for security and troubleshooting. Emails are kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any follow-up.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, erase or restrict the personal data we hold about you, to object to our processing, and to data portability where it applies. To exercise any of these, email dom@whichmtdsoftware.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), though we'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

This site is aimed at sole traders, landlords and their advisers — not children — and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the site handles data, we'll update this page and the “last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
